Do you have a passion for maintaining the environment?  Do you have an enthusiasm for the wellbeing of Tree’s and love of working outdoors? Are you dexterous and don’t mind working at height? Do you want to earn while you learn? If you can answer yes to all these questions then you may be the person we are searching for to join our Streetscene team as an Arborist Apprentice.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join our professional team of arborists to learn all aspects of managing trees, hedgerows and shrubs to make a positive impact on the green spaces in the area of East Devon.   The work is diverse and under our guidance you’ll learn how to undertake chainsaw work, aerial tree work, pruning, dismantling and using appropriate machinery to undertake the task in hand.

Not only will you get hands on practical experience we will also support you to attend, and undertake, a course of study with Bicton College to gain knowledge which will underpin your practical skills learnt on the job.

After one month you will:

  • Have a general understanding of the responsibilities of the Council, the role of Officers and Members and how the Council makes decisions
  • Have a good understanding of the role of the Council in maintaining its tree stock and its responsibilities, relationship with other services within the Council and external bodies
  • Have a good understanding of the relevant considerations of tree works and with assistance be able to deal with some basic customer enquiries

After three months with assistance you will be able to:

  • Identify different trees and shrubs
  • Carry out maintenance on a range of powered equipment and hand tools
  • Set out hazard signs, cordon off work site and choose equipment appropriate to the work

After six months you will be able to:

  • Set out and put away equipment and resources relevant to operations and to meet the requirements of the job
  • Carry out risk assessments relevant to the task you are carrying out and ensure risks are mitigated
  • Ensure the work site is left clean and tidy

After twelve months you will be able to:

  • State the legal and environmental restrictions and requirements of tree felling
  • Fell trees in a woodland situation with assistance
  • Understand the requirements for felling and extraction of timber

After eighteen months you will be able to:

  • Understand basic tree health following a basic visual tree inspection
  • Collect and interpret data to assist in the diagnosis of tree problems
  • Understand the diagnosis of tree problems
  • Carry out routine operator maintenance on a chainsaw
  • Comply with legislation and codes of practice relevant to tree operations
  • Fell small trees, undertake crown reduction and pruning using relevant equipment for the size of the job

At the end of the apprenticeship you will be able to:

  • Use chainsaws, chippers and Arboricultural equipment to climb, dismantle and fell trees of all sizes throughout the district as directed, achieving high Streetscene standards and objective
  • Carry out hedge laying, pruning, crown lifting/reductions, pollarding and woodland management
  • Use mechanical plant, equipment and vehicles; assisting teams throughout the District as directed
  • Plant and water new tree stock
  • Use mechanical plant such as mowers and strimmers to cut grass and verges where required
  • Carry out other StreetScene related activities such as collecting debris and litter
