How to make money with a blog

I’m often asked how to make money blogging so want in this article to lay out some basic steps that I see most bloggers who make a living from blogging go through.

Here is how to make money from a blog:

Set up your blog

First of all you need to purchase a domain name and web hosting. Find a domain name that best suits your blog content and then purchase the web hosting package that suits your needs.  Domain names are anything from 50p to £20 per year and web hosting can start from a couple of quid per month.  It is not expensive to start.

Once you have your domain and web hosting you can install WordPress on to your domain name, here you can build your website or add a theme.  There are many tutorials on the web and on you tube that shows you how to build a wordpress website ( I am a fan of wordpress as I love the flexibility of it however there are other easier web builders like Squarespace and Wix you can try).  Once you have added your logo, created your pages and got it looking how you want you are ready to go.

Start creating useful content

Once you blog is up and running you can go in to the backend and create your content, It is not hard to do, it is like using a basic version of Microsoft Word.  Type out your content, add images, put them in the right places and you are done. Once you have created it you just publish it and it will appear in the blog section of your website.  You can add sharing buttons that link to all the different social media sites so the content is easy to share.

Get off your blog and start finding readers

Ok so you have created an article about your subject and you want people to read it.  This is where you create eye catching social media posts and put a link to the webpage either in the post or in the comments.  This will drive traffic to the blog so people can read your article.  Make sure you have profiles on all the social media sites you like and create a group or a page that people who share your interest can join and talk about your article or anything else around the subject.

Build engagement with the readers that come

This links to the finding readers section, building engagement around your subject is THE most important part when using social media.  You need to think up ways to get people talking about your subject or article, the more engagement your post gets then the further it will spread.  You can also add a comments section on your website to build engagement on the blog as well as on social media.

Start making money from the readership you have through one or more of a variety of income streams

There are many different ways that you can make money from your blog but to begin with I recommend finding an advertising network (ie Google Adsense is one of many) and put adverts on your blog.. You have to apply to google first for this and it can take a few weeks before it is approved but once you are approved then you can start adding adverts to your pages.  There are other networks that do not take as long, some I have been accepted by straight way.

You can also add affiliate links from companies like Amazon, this is an advert to a specific product or products that appear on your blog page.  If people click on the link and purchase the product then you will get a percentage of the sale.

There are so many different networks and affiliate schemes you can find and sign up for, these are just the main 2 to give you an idea of what is possible.

I have not gone in to too much detail about how to create the blogs and how to set up advertising or affiliate links as there is a lot of content on the web and on you tube that can help you.   If you are not a technical person or want a blog but just do not have time to learn how to create it then we can create one for you, get in touch for a chat about content, design and prices.
